USS Nassau (LHA-4) was an American, classic amphibious assault ship. The keel for this unit was laid in 1973, the launch took place in January 1978, and commissioning took place in July 1979. The ship was 254 meters long, 32.5 meters wide, and had a full displacement of about 39,000 tons. The maximum speed did not exceed 24 knots. The unit was armed with, among others, two RIM-116 anti-aircraft missile launchers and two 20 mm Vulcan Phalanx sets. Aviation equipment consisted of a maximum of about 40 aircraft.

The USS Nassau (LHA-4) was one of the Tarawa-class ships. Tarawa-class ships were built to complement and later replace Iwo Jima-class ships. New units built in such a way as to be able to handle the landing operations of the US Marine Corps by various means of transport: helicopters, amphibians or amphibious barges. It was also assumed that the Tarawa-class ships would operate as part of larger fleet teams. Due to their size, they could play the role of light aircraft carriers and were adapted to the operation of the AV-8 Harrier II aircraft. USS Nassau (LHA-4) began writing the history of its service in the US Navy from operations in the Mediterranean Sea. The unit also actively supported American actions against Iraq in 1990-1991. In 1993, the ship supported NATO activities related to the ban on flights over Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2010, he supported a humanitarian action for Haiti. The unit was withdrawn from active service shortly after - in March 2011.
