Senso-ji (actually: Kinryu-zan Senso-ji) is a Japanese Buddhist temple in the Asakusa district of Tokyo on the island of Honshu. The construction of this facility was completed around 630 AD, which makes Senso-ji the oldest temple in the capital of the Land of the Rising Sun! Until the end of World War II, it was associated with the Tendai branch of Japanese Buddhism, but after 1945 it became independent. Currently, it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Tokyo, visited annually by about 30 million visitors! However, it still plays the role of one of the most important Buddhist temples in the Japanese Islands, and its role in this religious system can be compared to important European Catholic sanctuaries. The temple was destroyed as a result of the American bombing of March 10, 1945, but was quickly rebuilt after the end of World War II, becoming a kind of reconstruction of Japan. It is worth adding that one of the streets leading to Senso-ji is Nakamise-dori, which plays the role of a highly commercial street.
