The Nudelman N-37 is a Soviet 37mm air gun from the Cold War period. The weapon entered service in 1946 and its production lasted from 1946 to the beginning of the 1960s. The total weight of the weapon is approx. 100 kilograms, and the total length of this cannon (in the N-37D version) is up to 2.46 meters. The N-37 cannon has a theoretical rate of fire of 400 rounds per minute, and the initial velocity of the bullet is approx. 690 m / s. Design work on the N-37 began during World War II, and its first prototypes were tested in 1945. This cannon was a kind of modernization of the NS-37 cannon, in which the main aim was to reduce the weight, with the smallest possible reduction of the ballistic parameters of the weapon. From the beginning, it was also assumed that the weapons would be mounted on jet fighters, the main purpose of which would be to intercept US strategic bombers. In the course of production, several versions of this weapon were created, including: the N-37 (basic version), N-37D (version with a muzzle brake on the barrel) or the N-37L (version with an extended barrel). The N-37 cannon, in various versions, was mounted on such planes as the MiG-9, MiG-15 or MiG-17.
The Nudelman-Suranow NS-23 is a Soviet 23mm automatic air gun from the Cold War period. The weapon was produced in the years 1944-1949, and it entered service during World War II, but on a larger scale - only after 1945. Its total weight was approx. 37 kilograms, and the barrel length of this cannon was 1.45 meters. The NS-23 cannon had a theoretical rate of fire of 550 rounds per minute, and the initial velocity of the missile reached approx. 690 m / s. The NS-23 cannon was developed by AE Nudelman and A. Suranov for the needs of the Soviet Air Force, which wanted to obtain a successor to the WJa-23 cannon (incidentally, a caliber of 23 mm) from the Second World War. Compared to its predecessor, the new gun has been made smaller, lighter in weight and significantly reduced recoil. A similar rate of fire was also maintained, but all this was done at the expense of a drop in the initial velocity of the projectile. Two main variants of the NS-23 were created: NS-23KM intended for installation in aircraft wings and NS-23S with a synchroniser, intended for mounting in the fuselage and firing through the rotating propeller target. The gun was mounted on such aircraft as the Il-10, La-7, La-9, but also the MiG-9, MiG-15 or I³-28. At the turn of the 1940s and 1950s, the NS-23 cannon was replaced by the NR-23 cannon with an increased rate of fire.
