The M106 Mortar Carrier was an American self-propelled mortar from the Cold War period. The first prototypes of this car were built in the early 1960s, and the vehicle (A1 version) entered production in 1964. The car was powered by a single 210hp Detroit Diesel 6V53T 6-cylinder engine. The total length of the cart was 4.9 meters and a width of 2.7 meters. The curb weight reached 11.7 tons. In the M106A1 version, the vehicle was armed with a 107 mm mortar and a single 12.7 mm M2 machine gun.
The M106 Mortar Carrier was developed as a development version of the M113 tracked armored personnel carrier and was one of the most widely used versions of it. It was designed to support, with indirect fire, own mechanized infantry at the battalion level. It differs from its predecessor mainly in the rear part of the vehicle, in which the mortar was placed, and a special cover was added to the roof of the crew compartment to protect the mortar during the march. Originally, the M106 was armed with a 107mm mortar, but the 120mm M120 (Soltam K6) mortar is used from the M106A3 version onwards. In the US Army, the M106 cars were replaced by the M1064 cars, which, however, are in essence a development version of their predecessors.
