Despite its rotund appearance, the J 29 was fast and agile, serving effectively in both fighter and fighter-bomber roles into the 1970s.
J-29B Fighter, 332 built 1953–55; featured 50% larger fuel capacity and underwing hardpoints to carry bombs, rockets and drop-tanks.

The Saab J-29 Tunnan (Swedish barrel) was a Swedish mid-wing fighter with an all-metal structure from the post-war period. The prototype flight took place in 1948. Serial production was carried out in the years 1948-1956, and in its course 661 aircraft of this type were created. The drive was provided by a single Svenska Flygmotor RM2B turbojet engine, which was a license version of the DH Ghost engine. The deck armament consisted of four 20mm Hispano V cannons.
The Saab J-29 Tunnan was developed as the successor to the Saab J-21 machines. Work on the new plane began in December 1945, and the biggest problem in their course was the selection of the appropriate power unit. Finally, it was decided to purchase a license for the de Havilland Ghost engine, which also became the "heart" of the new aircraft. Ultimately, the Saab J-29 Tunnan turned out to be a great machine - one of the best fighters in the world for years. 50 of the 20th century. It was characterized by very good performance, great maneuverability and a solid structure. Based on the basic version of this excellent aircraft, several development versions were created, for example: J-29A (basic version, fighter version), A / J-29B (fighter-attack version) or S-29C (reconnaissance version). Austria was the only foreign user of the Saab J-29 Tunnan aircraft.
