The Polikarpov I-1 is a Soviet low-wing fighter with a mixed fixed undercarriage. The first prototype of this monoplane flew on August 15, 1923, but it turned out to be very unstable and the flight ended in an accident. The problem was the wrong positioning of its center of gravity and after the "tunnel" trials the motor was moved forward which corrected its previous wrong position. After a complete overhaul of the entire machine, it was renamed the IL-400B (IL-400bis) and tested again in June 1924. The fuselage of the new model was covered with plywood, but the wings and tail were covered with aluminum. the basic armament was 2 synchronized 7.62mm machine guns mounted in the upper part of the bow just behind the propeller. After final testing, it was put into production and marked with the code I-1; 33 planes were ordered, but only 18 were completed due to the cost of aluminum, which was very expensive at the time. The plane turned out to be very difficult to pilot even for experienced pilots and was deemed useless, after which its production was stopped. The aircraft never entered line service. Technical data: length: 8.3 m, wingspan: 10.8 m, maximum speed: 264 km / h, practical ceiling: 6750 m, maximum range: 650 km, armament: fixed - two 7.62 mm PV-1 machine guns.
