IBG 70012 HMS Ithuriel 1942 British I-class destroyer

HMS Ithuriel (H05) was a British WWII destroyer. The keel for this unit was laid in 1939, the launch took place in December 1940, and entry into service with the Royal Navy - only in 1942. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 98.5 meters and a width of 10.1 meters. Full displacement reached approx. 1,900 tons, and maximum speed reached approx. 35.5 - 36 knots. The armament at the time of launching consisted of, among other things: four single 120 mm guns, two quadruple 533 mm torpedo tubes and depth charges.

HMS Ithuriel (H05) was one of the destroyers belonging to the I-type. In general, the destroyers of this type were modeled on the H-class ships, with reinforced torpedo armament and a slightly different shape of the forward superstructure and the command deck. The units of cash register I also had relatively strong ZOP (anti-submarine) armament. One of the destroyers of this type was just HMS Ithuriel, who it was originally built as a Gayret for the Turkish Navy at the Vickers-Armstrong shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness. However, shortly after the outbreak of World War II, it was bought by Great Britain. From the moment of entering service in 1942, the unit sailed mainly in the cover of convoys heading towards Malta - it took part in the Harpoon and Pedestal operations in June and August 1942. In November of the same year HMS Ithuriel was severely damaged in an air attack. The damage turned out to be so serious that the unit did not enter active service until the end of the war. However, it carried out training tasks at the base in Gibraltar in 1943, and a year later it was sent to Great Britain, where it was sold for scrap.
