GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) is a contemporary, American, precision soaring aerial bomb. It is capable of carrying explosives weighing up to 23 kg, with a total curb weight of up to 129 kg. The bomb entered the equipment of the US armed forces in 2006. The unit cost of the bomb in 2016 was estimated at $ 40,000 (USD). Boeing is responsible for its production.
Work on GBU-39 began in the mid-1990s. In the course of this work, emphasis was placed on the possibility of carrying by one plane as many bombs as possible, which, when dropped, would precisely hit completely different targets. Finally, two bombs were created: GBU-39, which is dedicated to destroying stationary targets and is guided by the INS / GPS system, and GBU-40, which has a thermal head and is used to destroy moving targets (e.g. tanks or armored vehicles). The GBU-39's accuracy is estimated at 5 to 8 meters, and despite its small warhead, it is able to penetrate 1.8 meters of reinforced concrete - the same amount as a BLU-109 bomb weighing 907 kilograms! GBU-39 bombs can be carried by, among others: F-16 C / D Fighting Falcon, F-15 E Strike Eagle, F-22 Raptor or F-35 Lightning II. It can probably also be carried by American drones, such as the MQ-1 Predator.
The BRU-61 / A is a multi-lock, British-made, modern-day, suspended air beam. Cobham plc plants are responsible for its design and production based in the city of Wimborne Minster in Great Britain. According to the data provided by the manufacturer, the length of the beam is 363 cm, with a maximum width of 36 cm and a height also equal to 36 centimeters. The weight of the empty beam is 145 kilograms. The presented beam is suspended from the fixed suspension point of the plane (pylon), and the reinforcement is suspended from it. Thanks to this solution, the aircraft is able to carry a greater number of overhead weapons. BRU-61 / A is dedicated primarily to carrying intelligent weapons, namely GBU-39 / B SDB bombs. It entered service with the USAF in 2006 and is capable of carrying up to four GBU-39 / B SDB bombs. The BRU-61 / A beam can be attached to many American planes, including the F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 C / D Fighting Falcon or A-10 Thunderbolt II.
