TunnisteetHMS-Sirius

HMS Sirius (82) was a British light cruiser of the Second World War. The keel for this unit was laid in 1938, and the launch took place in September 1940. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 156 meters and the width was 15.4 meters. Full displacement reached approximately 6,900 tons, and the maximum speed was approximately 32 knots. The armament at the time of the launch consisted of, among other things, four twin 133 mm guns, 102 mm guns and two triple 533 mm torpedo tubes.

HMS Sirius was one of the Dido-class cruisers. The ships of this type were designed under the quite clear influence of the British Arethusa-class units. At the same time, they were primarily designed as shielding units for convoys and for action in the Mediterranean Sea. It is worth adding that the Bellona subtype (class), often included in the Dido class, was rather created to support amphibious operations and was rather intended to be used in the Pacific. HMS Sirius, shortly after entering service, was used for operations in the Mediterranean, for example as cover for convoys bound for Malta. It was later dispatched to the South Atlantic to support Operation Torch in late 1942. The unit also took an active part in supporting the Allied landing in Sicily in July 1943. At the end of that year, the unit was damaged and was under repair from November 1943 to February 1944. After repairs, HMS Sirius returned to the British Isles and in June 1944 participated in the operations related to the Normandy landings. Interestingly, in August of the same year, the unit returned to the Mediterranean Sea and supported the Allied landing in southern France. HMS Sirius remained in the Mediterranean Sea until the end of the war. It was decommissioned in 1951.
