Szwiecow Asz-73 (eng. Shvetsov ASh-73) is a Soviet aircraft engine from the post-war era. Its first successful start-up took place in 1946 and its serial production ran from 1947 to 1957. It is sometimes assumed that its total production has exceeded 14,000 units. The capacity of this power unit (version Asz-73TK) was 58.12 liters, and the weight of the "dry" engine of this type did not exceed 1,339 kilograms. The engine length was 2.29 meters with a diameter of 1.37 meters. The presented power unit is an 18-cylinder air-cooled radial engine with a maximum power of 2720 HP. Work on the Szwiecow Asz-73 engine began at the end of the 1930s, and the engine itself is a very far-reaching development of the Szwiecow M-25 engine, which in turn was based on the American Wright R-1820-F3. It is worth adding that, contrary to popular opinion, the presented engine is not a simple copy of the American Wright R-3350 engine, but it is possible that some solutions from this engine were used in it - especially the design of the turbocharger.
